Interview with Payal Roy author of 12 Precious Anecdotes from Life

Why are you taking part in the author blog challenge and what do you hope to achieve?

I am new to this world of bloggers. It has been only 6 months since I have begun blogging, and I am fascinated by the wealth of information that millions of bloggers share with the world through the net. I feel blogging is an essential part of networking with like minded people and prospective readers in the virtual world. Through blogging we can take note of valuable information that can assist us in our daily lives. For example- I am an indie author myself, and I find blogging to be one of the best portals to share my voice about my books and their characters, and support other author friends as myself across the world. Through blogging we can stay connected and learn from each other about any new updates in our writing and publishing world.

I have two blog sites where I post updates about my latest ebooks, excerpts, daily experiences and of course showcase and feature fellow indie authors and their books for free. Yes, I give a free service as I want to do my bit in this fantastic world of indie author write ups, self publications and promotions. So, I also invite fellow indie authors to showcase and feature their ebook links, author profiles in my blog : and Muse with Coffee.

I invite reader friends to visit blogsites of us indie authors and show us support by posting comments about our ebook features and visit our ebook links.

How long have you been writing for?

I have been writing since my childhood days, almost 12 years now. I realized my passion and potential for writing during our classes on literature in our junior school. I began with writing poetry. It came to me naturally, and I still have my poetry diary with me, containing my poems written during the childhood days. As I grew up, my focus shifted to writing short stories — contemporary fiction with a touch of inspiration and motivation from real life. I am also writing novels- fiction, fantasy — young adult genre. Currently 2 of my ebooks are published : One of poetry genre — MEMOIRS: THE SOULFUL RECOLLECTION FRIENDSHIP AND LIFE and another of contemporary fiction-adventure & inspiration — 12 PRECIOUS ANECDOTES FROM LIFE.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

For me, writing a book requires concentration, patience, discipline, solitude and time management. Of course, the state of the mind, i.e the author’s mood is most important. If I am distracted in any way, or I find things in disorder about me when I am about to begin a new chapter in writing, my mood turns from good to bad and then I develop a kind of temporary block, but I get over it quickly. So, I would say keeping the mind focused and the mood happy is the most difficult part of writing a book.

What genre do you generally write?

I write the following genres : contemporary fiction, poetry, self help, inspirational and motivational, fantasy and young adult.

Do you have a favourite author and why?

I actually have 2 favourite authors. One from the fiction-thriller genre , his name is Colin Forbes and another from fiction-self help genre, his name is Robin Sharma.

Reason- I like books by Colin Forbes as his words are quite lucid, and his thrillers really put you on the edge of your seat. His strategies of attention to detail in his novels and gradually revealing the different light and dark shades of his characters make the plots of his novels riveting and awesome. His choiced usage of words and vocabulary are very apt in making his novels good, fast-paced reads.

I also like Robin Sharma’s books, I read quite a few of them. He has this uncanny ability to get you involved into the world of his characters and through his simple yet deeply insightful words, he is able to make you look deep within yourself and inspire and motivate you.

What is your book called and how did you choose this title?

For many days I was looking forward to write a book of the genre contemporary fiction, that would also add a touch of intrigue, adventure, humour, inspiration and let us reflect upon the precious opportunities and lessons life sends our way, and our own contribution to life and nature. This book has 12 short stories which add such an element to garner a reader’s interest and attempt to focus on why life is a gift and why life should be lived to the fullest.

Has your book been published and how did you go about this?

Yes, my book has been published. It is currently published as an ebook at the Amazon Kindle stores of US, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. I was contemplating to publish my work for a couple of years now, when I came across several popular online bookretailes who sell ebooks in addition to paper backs. I did some research and saw that the market for indie ebooks and self published ebooks looked hugely promising in the coming decade. By publishing ebooks, such bookstores can take my ebook in front of millions of prospective readers across the net. The virtual world is growing day by day,and this is a great opportunity to participate in.

So, I looked into several online book retailers- I prefer Amazon and Smashwords. I looked into their publishing guidelines, followed their instructions and came up with a properly formatted ebook as well as a cover image. I didn’t hire an external professional for formatting or preparing a cover image, as I am quite comfortable doing it myself. If their instructions are followed, it is quite easy. I followed Mark Coker’s free ebook Smashwords Style Guide for proper formatting and Amazon’s Kindle Publishing Guide for their precise specifications for a kindle ebook and cover image.

Approximately how long did it take you to finish your book?

My current ebook which is a short read, as it has short stories took nearly 2 months to finish.

Do you use social media to promote your book, if yes then which social networks do you like the most?

Yes, I use social media to promote my book, more so as my book is an ebook. I prefer Twitter feeds, Facebook Pages, Stumble Upon, Digg, bing, reddit, dotnetshoutout, blogsites like wordpress and Google’s eblogger, emailing people I know who would be interested in my work, G+ from Google social network, Delicious and Tumblr.

Have you enrolled your book onto Amazon’s KDP Select and how have you found it?

Yes, my book is enrolled in Amazon’s KDP Select. This is the first time I have enrolled my book in Amazon’s KDP Select, so I cannot comment about it at the moment until my ebook completes the first 90 day period in KDP Select. (adding here the extra information) — My book 12 Precious Anecdotes from Life will have a scheduled promo run as a Weekend Kindle Freebie in the KDP Select program for 2 days– 23rd June and 24th June.

What books do you like to read in your spare time?

In my spare time, I like to read contemporary fiction, mystery and thrillers, poetry, selfhelp and fantasy genre of books.

What do you feel is the most important stage of writing a book?

I feel , the beginning stage of writing a book is most important. You have begun the work, and it has to reach the end but with interesting and defining chapters in the beginning which will hold the reader’s attention and hook him/her to the book till the end. The reader generally begins reading the whole book by reading a sample of the book’s initial chapters. If they are riveting and interesting, the reader would go for the book. So, the beginning stages of the book are most important according to me.

How did you go about designing the cover for your book?

I utilized Microsoft Paint Software for designing the cover of my book. I resized the canvas size of the cover as per the specifications required by Amazon Kindlestore.

Are you writing or considering writing a follow-up to your book?

I am writing another book, but it is not a follow -up to my present book. I prefer to write non-series books for now.

Where is your book available to buy?

My book 12 PRECIOUS ANECDOTES FROM LIFE is available for buying at all the outlets of Amazon Kindle stores. The book is enrolled in US Amazon KDP Select and is available for monthly borrows and Kindle lending for Amazon Prime readers as well.
